here's a few reasons why lucas provides me with inspiration:
1. he likes speed, velocity, less and less exposition. i find that interesting in the context of filmmaking/editing
2. after his legendary car accident in his 2 cylinder fiat he decided to turn his back on a career in his father's stationary business and try and do something worthwhile. he has become a household name and his 'product' has affected the whole world.
3. i do not dispute his lack of directing talent. he is, however, a truly collaborative filmmaker and helped kick start the careers of many of today's best artists and engineers etc.
4. he is keen to push the envelope. perhap's he's personally run out of envelope for narrative, but now he's turned his attention to digital filmmaking we should all benefit from that, just like we benefitted from THX being amongst the first 'serious' attempts at producing a top quality soundtrack on VHS, and let's not forget the 'widescreen' craze all that started in the early 90s.
5. willow had the first cgi morph in cinema history, another reason i quite like that flick ;-)
6. two of his favourite mottos are (were?) "question authority" and "deeds, not words" -- two lessons many filmmakers on this board might do well to take note of
7. he is actively looking for upcoming filmmakers and talent to continue his empire when he is gone

miker.... although your list of inspirations is worthy it's hardly anything special. It kinda places Lucas in the `Bob Ordinary` league. Bob was a guy who, after a car crash, decided he wanted to make a difference. He helped to establish new standards for video duplication and has an interest in young film makers. He also has an interest in fast things. Hardly jaw dropping is it.
Apart from this we are agreed. Lucas' directing leaves alot to be desired and certainly doesn't deserve the accolades people give to him. Personally I would be worried if a young film maker were trying to develop directing skills like Lucas... there are so many better directors out there.
All this to one side... you probably mistake me for giving a monkeys about Lucas. I don't really it's just amusing to come on here and stir up some reactions. As I said he leaves me feeling entirely indifferent.

despin i really belive you need to think more before you write.. i quote
"If I made a movie and people were willing to buy toys and posters and different editions I would make them and sell them. "
so if children wanted to buy crack from you (because it was in your movie), would you quite happily market it and sell it to them because it's "COMMON SENSE"? - are you (like lucas) willing to screw people in the ass for over priced crap, so that you can produce another shitty movie and make more money out of that one, (the cycle goes on) so the poor get poorer, rich get richer and the dumb get dumber... that is not common sense

I've got nothing against his films as such, but it's common knowledge the man is mad as a march hare.
Are you aware he keeps an army of chained monkeys under captivity to keep iMDB running? Thought not. What do you think of the patrant saint of Lucas now eh?
I think I've made my point.

There is much more to Starwars than special effects. If its effects were the only thing going for it then I'm sure it wouldn't be nearly as popular as it is. Not in todays world, where any crappy straight to video film can have great effects due to computers. More and more young people get into the film without any feelings of nostalgia to influence them.
Lucas created some of the most memorable characters in history and the greatest fantasy land in which to place them.
Starwars has some of the most often quoted lines and most often copied scenes in movie history.
Starwars is special.
